choose configuration inside sub assembly with DT

hey, can anybody help me with this?

i'm modeling a "top down" parametric industrial installation and i want to control a pipe (called 'lifting pipe') configuration (diameter and welding schedule) in a sub assembly (called 'internals') with the design table of the total assembly.

SW seems not to be able to find the specific component i want to configure, is it impossible to "step down" a layer into the sub assembly?

(i temporarely fixed this issue by making a DT for the sub assembly wich contains different pipe configs. this generated a couple of configs of the sub assembly which i now select with the DT of the total assy.
Though this works for now, i don't want to have to do this for each component...)

pulling the part out of the sub assembly is not an option, other components and drawings depend on it.

The column header without sub assembly would be:
$configuration@lifting pipe<3>
i've tried:
$configuration@internals<1>@lifting pipe<3>
$configuration@lifting pipe<3>@internals<1>
but none of this works...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
