How can I implement product options?

Hi,

at the Moment we are facing
the challenge to implement different products Option.

Daily examples are

We want to Change the capacity of
the product. For this different manufacturer part numbers have to be used. For instance,
upgrading from 100A capacity to 200A capacity.
The actual logic in the circuit keeps the same

Adding / removing items from the
circuit based on the requested option. For instance: adding a module incl. associated
circuit.

Is there any smart way of
implementing these functions into SWE ?

What options are available?

Correct Answer

You are looking for something similar to variants in the PCB which, unfortunately, we do not have yet in SOLIDWORKS Electrical. The only option I know of would be to copy the project pages and place them in a new project (or a different book) and make the changes.

Fortunately you can make the changes using the update data fields pretty quick.

You'll want to use "configurations" to turn options on and off within the assembly. You can assign unique part numbers to each configuration, "100A", "200A", etc...

If you have not used configurations before it is worthwhile to note a few things:

Configs turn things on and off (suppressed or unsuppressed), this applies to parts, features and mates.

Do not confuse "display states" with configurations, display states control the visual aspects of the model, not suppression.

Watch some YouTube videos to familiarize yourself.

Oh boy, I didn't even notice that this was in the electrical category. I've designed the mechanical end of a number of larger electrical devices and we did all the component variants with "normal" SW and configs. We used electrical just for the cabling, harnesses and terminations. Sorry for the misleading info.

Hi,

Just seconding this a feature request - I'd love it to work like configurations in Solidworks (mechanical). ie. the different variants of our product are represented simultaneously by the design, so if you change 1 component that's common to all configurations, all the different BOMs of all the variants update to show that change.

There actually IS a way to do this.

You can use the the find/replace tools. It will list ALL the parts in the project. You then enter in the new part numbers to replace them. This schema may then be saved for recall later. It can be loaded and run, or modified before run (which is nice as it identifies the items you change in the project.
