Smart features needing to be checked out from PDM

Question asked by Mike Hodson on Oct 10, 2018

I have parts which have a smart feature that puts mounting holes into other parts they are assembled with.

I've recently started using Solidworks PDM, and now when I activate the smart feature of these parts, I get a warning that I can't edit them because they aren't checked out.   Then, when I save the assembly, it wants to save a copy of those parts.

This doesn't make sense to me.   Activating the smart feature isn't editing the part and I shouldn't need to save a new version of the part.

I don't want to have to check these parts out, just to use their smart feature, but I'll test that out.

Am I missing something?
