In tools>options>import, do you have 3D Interconnect enabled? If so, try disabling it and importing it again.
You can also just save the imported assembly as a SW part by file>save as - part. This will make the assembly a multibody part. Ensure that All Components is checked whilst doing so.

The direct answer to your question is yes. Just RMB on the parts and select Break Link.
