Yes, Jim, it is true, Inventor doesn`t even have a circle in 3D sketch, create a plane and draw polygon manually as me here Is it impossible task for SW?
As Paul Salvador said, you can create the polygon in a 2d sketch. If you still need it in your 3d skecth you could then use the Convert Entities tool while in the 3d sketch to recreate it.
It is a rare case when you have the ability to split your sketch to 2d and 3d part, but it is not a big problem to create polygon manually in 3d.
The real problem is that SW and any other CAD systems have big problems with solving of such 3d sketches (constraints)
So, a few simple polygons in 3d hang up your super computer with ease.

True, in fact I had started by making a sketch with a polygon then creating a second plane to put a second polygon on until I said, "this is stupid I should just use a 3D sketch". That is when I found out it wouldn't work. I have already finished the task, just was wondering what I was doing wrong. Apparently nothing.
Jim.. I don't recall it being available in the past,.. so, you'd need to create another/separate sketch.
