Now (SW2018sp4 SPR_925552) it is possible, in-context parts don`t lose their links to assembly.
Awesome news, thanks for sharing

Grant Mattis - is this the SPR you were referring to??
Not the one I was looking for but I just checked and it is up now too. I will be posting so all top down modelers can vote if they are interested. I believe this SPR is for non PDM users as I don't seem to have the issue that is defined in the SPR.
Will this work in a PDM Pro enviroment? I'm pretty sure that last time we tried this, renaming worked, but drawings lost their reference to renamed parts..?
I don`t use PDM, works well with drawings without PDM, unfortunately, it is necessary to rename drawing manually, but links are OK.
I'm just going to guess: they need to be checked out when you do the renaming?
No, always make sure items are checked in, otherwise references will be broken since the database can't update.
The updated references won't be saved to the drawing if it's read-only.
As to my knowledge, the PDM database holds these references. Imagine you had to rename a single file, referenced by hundreds of assemblies/drawings. You would have to check these out? Not to my knowledge. We use PDM Pro, and do renaming when files are checked in. Always worked for us.
If you know the answer, why are you asking?
