How to flatten lofted thin section

I need help in understanding how to flatten a thin-walled lofted section. I have made a .002" cut at the bottom and thought I could hold one of those faces stationary while flattening. This does not seem to match what the software expects. This should be easy! A snapshot:

 

The bottom surface where the cut is located is perpendicular to the front face whereas the surface opposite that is obtuse. Thus, the object forma an asymmetric cone.
