Quick question.... How do I put a section view from one layout onto a new layout with out converting it as a sketch and copy and paste it.? Thanks M SW2018
As Philip Chambers said, you can move a section view (or detail view) from one sheet to another by clicking on it in the tree and dragging and dropping it on the sheet name of the sheet you want it on. I do it all the time. There's no need to duplicate views and move them off the sheet.
Have you tried selecting the view in question in the 'feature manager design tree' and doing CTRL+C
and then going to the other layout and doing CTRL+V ?
Thanks just tried it, didn't work though.. Seamed like such a simple fix.:) Has it worked for you?
hmm..... I'm sorry. It works for normal views but it doesn't seem to work for section views, my bad.
Correction of the correction, it does work.
But you might have to copy the view that is used to make the section as well to make it work.
Just put in outside the sheet so it won't be printed.
In short, it does work but you have to do one additional step.
? additional step?
Yea Mark.. I think the additional step Peter is referring to is move the parent view outside the sheet boundary. In my example I did a Ctrl select on the parent view and the section view (Ctrl+C) then pasted them to another sheet, then hid the parent view.
Thanks all for the replies.
The cut and paste kind of works as Dennis and Peter suggested, but you have to select all parent views as well. So I had an idea, I copied and pasted the layout to a new sheet and moved the views I didn't want off the page, thus keeping the parent still active. Then back to the original and moved the detail view off the page. This gave me the result I was looking for. GA on page one and details on subsequent pages. This has the added benefit of copying all of the title block details at the same time so you don't have to type out dwg number, title and ref again.
See above to prove Glenn's point.
It used to be that CTRL+C / CTRL+V did that too, or so I thought.
This is great.. every day a school day..
Still stuck with SW2015 here, but I was able to drag the section view to a different sheet in the tree.
Or select the section view on the sheet and cut and paste to another sheet without the need to move the original too.
I (and Peter) were under the impression that Mark wanted to copy the section view from one area to another and was aware that you could move it,, therefore the responses we gave. I'm quite certain that is a standards no-no but to each his own.
Never thought of doing that, dragging on to a new sheet in the feature tree really works!!

Soo.... Just to make sure we're all on the same page. What do you mean by "layout"? Do you mean a different sheet of the same .slddrw file, or a different drawing file? You can't put a section view onto a different drawing without its parent. But, as Glenn said, you can move views easily from sheet to sheet within the same drawing file by dragging and dropping in the feature tree. The only additional thing to note is that you can only drag views in the feature tree that are on the currently active sheet.
Everyone, you've been really helpful.. even though my question might of been a little confusing! I've been using SW for a good 10 years now and never new about dragging and dropping a detail/section view.... Brilliant!!
