There are a few ways to do this. You can create your Text file, and make a custom property that each file template is going to reference.
This is an example of te one I developed for my company for drawing files all but the date fields are drop downs to editable lists captured by custom property tabs from the text files.:
Every file has he same info and then some, lesser the name and date fields...

I've got the first drop down working (where I can select the parent property). What I'd like to do is have two remaining fields auto-populate with the subsequent values and not have to select them from a drop down or manually type them.
Ie. Using the list below; I would select "BATTERIES" from the drop down and then the next field would auto populate "0200" and the next field would autopopulate "02"

You can set your selection type to an Excel file as well as a text file in SWX18. I am not sure if this is available in previous versions.
This may work well for you if you have your data being pulled together in some sort of logic based rules in excel.
I have not used this feature yet. We still have our selection lists setup as Text files for now.
