it would be nice to add reverse of shell feature. Instead of cutting, that it could add a solid layer above an object - selected faces.
or maybe is there a function for this already? something like body-offset would be nice.
Hi, are you searching for the feature Thicken?
2017 SOLIDWORKS Help - Thicken
This can be used with surfaces to convert into bodies.
You mean this feature:
... and the neat thing about the shell feature is that you don't have to select the body in order to shell inward or outward.
Yeah I did this with shell. First copy a body, then shell it outwards (since it doesn't make a copy of it). I made a mini hole in the body, so shell would work properly.
Hole is not needed.
Attach your file here if you can't figure it out.

maybe in new version you can "keep the face" for shell feature...?
As J. Mather said you don't need the hole. When you have more than one solid body you need to select the body to shell in the appropriate box as shown below & not in the faces to remove box which is what I assume you did.
I see. Instead of selecting surface, I can select a body for shell feature. thanks.
That's what I was saying above, you don't need to select anything when you're doing the "body" for either inside shell or outside shell.
You have different selection windows depending on the number of solid bodies in your part.
If there is only one solid body there is no option to select bodies, you can just select faces to remove from the shell. If there are multiple solid bodies then SolidWorks needs to know which body you want the shell applied to & an option appears below the faces to remove window where you can select the body.
