this is really annoying, i would much prefer to combine the feature rather than be forced to merge bodies together!!

Just saw you said feature!
The only way to get it not to merge would be to make sure the original feature is not merged beforehand.
This then means you would be using mirror solid not feature, I know it is a bit of a work around but if you think about it, youi have asked it to mirror the feature the exact same as the original.
Hi Robert
I find this really annoying too. For me the problem really manifests itself when doing a linear pattern with the vary sketch option.
merge result checkbox missing in 1st extrude creates problem for linear pattern
The problem is that for the first extrude type feature in a part there is no option to uncheck merge result. So because the default behaviour is merge and there is no option to uncheck it (even if you add a weldment feature) the work-a-round is to extrude a dummy body somewhere.
Unfortunately this is impossible with a mirror, but normally mirror bodies will give you what you want.
The extremely complicated work-a-round is to work in negative space. Normally there is a simpler way, but occasionally it is the only way!
use cuts not extrudes
mirror the cuts
combine / subtract
Could you post an image of what exactly you are trying to achieve?
Is this what you mean?
