Weldment Bracket

Hi,

I am creating canopies with weldments but I need to add company bespoke brackets.

Currently I create the weldment structure and then import it into an assembly. Then I add one by on the connection brackets into the assembly.

Finally I project the fixing holes onto the weldment from the assembly - very time consuming.

Ideally I would like to fix a bracket to the weldment in the weldment window - like you would a gusset, then automatically generate the fixing holes.

I know this is probably too much to ask in one or two clicks but I need a quicker work flow.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

In the weldment environment you can go Insert --- part and select your standard component and mate as normal.

As Igor Fomenko indicated, a little more information would be helpful, but I'll try to help anyway. It might work better to create all the holes directly in the Assembly as an Assembly feature, selecting the option to propagate the feature to the Part.

  Using of Assembly Hole Feature with propagation is a bad idea, unfortunately. These holes crash SW if you change plane for holes, they can cut fasteners in holes also.
  So, I don`t recommend this feature, I decided to create holes in each part and link hole sketches to master skeleton sketch in the assembly.

    To each his own, but I've used the feature without problems. As far as "they can cut fasteners in holes also", that's only if you aren't careful about selecting the desired components to apply the feature to. I never leave the default selections.

Probably inserting the bracket into weldment would be way to go - that is inserting a part into a part.

Go to Insert Menu
Insert
/Part
I use weldments alot and generally treat the welded part the same as the real thing. If in real physical world, the weldment is one part that is fully welded together and it goes to customer like that, it is one part in Solidworks. Doing things this way also keeps the assembly tree alot less cluttered.
You can then project holes etc to your hearts content, for your bracket without any problems.
I'm using Insert Part into Part alot where I'm currently working on contract. Dairy industry/valve and pump skids with alot of stainless pipes as weldments with BSM fittings on connections.

To make your life easier make sure the part you are inserting has a Mate Reference setup. If you have a few other configurations set up for your bracket, it is then an easy matter to change the size. Also make sure you setup Description in Custom Properties for each Config of inserted part , then you get a the proper text in Cutlist.

The only irritating part of doing it this way, is the interface for inserting part into part. It is quite different than for Assembly.
For some strange reason SWX uses the Body-Move/Copy feature, (yet another strange inconsistency in this program, for which they need a swift kick up the arse)
My only plea to programmers when they get around to fixing this program properly, is to use a workflow similar to mating, not the clunky Body-Move/Copy feature.
