The online configurator doesn't provide neutral format CAD to download for end consumers, which protects IP.
A manufacturer may choose to share CAD data separately afterwards.
What's your thought on this? How can the online 3D configurator help?

I have a need to create an online cad configurator, with the primary purpose for the user to be able to download neutral format cad. Visualization during the configuration is also important, but downloading cad is the primary need. So it sounds like SW-Sell is not feasible for this project.

How would the users use the downloaded neutral format CAD? Do you mean STP or IGS for machining? Or further design?
The visualized data is lightweight for quick online configurations.

Customers design and build tooling, they are sophisticated cad users. Typical download formats are stp, igs, or x_t. Think of a machine builder who may use pneumatic cylinders in their machines. They need to have 3D cad for the cylinders to include in the complete machine design. In the same manner, our customers need complete 3D to include in their products. Also the 3D will be modified by the customer as needed, so the downloaded cad must be complete 3D solids, not just visualizations. There is no IP concern for this project.

3D content central and the use case as Scott mentioned are primarily for engineering.
After engineering processes, SOLIDWORKS Sell is a sales and marketing tool to publish 3D models online quickly, and re-purpose them to empower consumer customization.

an online platform that does not offer CAD file downloads is of NO use to anyone who supplies/shops for customizable components. And in my opinion, it is of limited use for those involved in end user goods. This is the 21st century, after all.
