Closed Pin (Circle) that I need to open. How do I test?

Good afternoon and hello all.

I am after some assistance. I have a Circular Pin (attached) that has a clip holding it together. I have designed it closed so that I can line up all of the parts properly. It is supposed to be one part that can open once unclipped.

My question is:

I need to see it open, and test how far it will open when unclipped. I am hoping that there is a way to do this, however my knowledge base on SOLIDWORKS is growing day by day and for the life of me I cannot find out how to do this.

DISCLAIMER: If there is anything I have done wrong with the base construction of this drawing I am new to SOLIDWORKS, but I am sorry

Hi Stephen,
I can't open your file because you are on a newer version than I. Having said that, two options come to mind. Either use configurations like the hinge tutorial does that comes with your software, or, create the pin in several parts and create a moving assembly.

  I have been informed that it is one part and not the assembly of three parts.
  For backward compatibility I haved saved as an .stl file (I hope that it goes backwards.....)

    Next time please save it out as a parasolid.
    
    If it is a single part then (I think) you need to run simulation on the it because how far you can "bend" the clip apart will be based on material properties.

Hello,

As Mr. Bear , and Mr. Mather seconded, I'd make this an assembly with the "base" as the fixed part.
Then mate the other two parts to it in the closed state.

<TANGENT>
You could do this in a single part that has multiple bodies, but manipulating parts in an assembly, for me, is much easier than manipulating bodies within a part file (those with more multiple body part file experience may disagree with me on this, so do keep in mind that multiple body part files are a viable, and perhaps better, workflow option for some situations).

Then create a new configuration ("config") for the open state. Suppress the mates that hold the clamps closed and create new mates for the open condition.

Don't suppress any mates (& recreate them in another config) that are common to open and closed.

I believe by default, the new mates you add in the open state config will be suppressed in the closed state config.
And since you suppressed the closing mates while the open configuration is the active one, the closing mates are not suppressed in the closed configuration. Basically, what you do in one configuration doesn't (necessarily) happen in other configuration(s).

When this assembly is finished, create another assembly for layout and insert the pin as the first (& fixed part).
Then insert the clamp assembly file into the layout assembly, using mates to locate it on the pin as required.
Copy the clamp assembly and locate it further along the pin.
For each clamp assembly, you can indiependently choose which configuration (open or closed) is displayed.
You don't have to add a second clamp to toggle configurations, but by having two copies, you can visiualize open and closed at the same time.

Lastly, looking at the pivot regions, there doesn't seem to be much pivot space within the base's vee junctions and with the relief holes, it appears you're relying on flexure to some extent.
If so, assembly mating/configurations (or multibody parts), I don't believe, will work for checking flexing.
I believe simulation is required for this, and for that, you'll need SW Premium (if you don't have it already).

And you needn't apologize for being a newbie.
We were all noobs once and since SW is broad in scope, there are areas where I'd be consider a noob if I ventured "off the trail".

  Thank you kevin and all. Unfortunately I can only afford the Standard edition, so wasnt sure if I was able to do this in this software.
  
  I shall try this next. Ask me to design a road on Civil 3D, piece of cake, ask me to design a moving CAM part and my brain falls to bits. But I am trying to expand my knowledge, so must learn these things.

Your model has three solid bodies. When you unclip the part does not break up into three individual pieces? If so would not the unclipped distance be 'infinite'.

I would have modeled as multi-body too, but then push out the individual parts to part files and build an assembly.
