I have been playing around with skeleton modeling, using an underlying sketch to control most of the parts / assemblies.  One thing that I struggle with is using 3d sketches.  For simplicity I have been using 2d sketches.  3d sketches seem to sometimes fall apart on me sending lines going in directions I don't intend. 

 

What are some ways to combine the 2d sketches into a 3d sketch.  Is there a way to force everything I am drawing to stay on the x,y plane?  That way I don't have to worry about things shooting off in the wrong directions?   Then turn that off when I am wanting to sketch in the other directions?  Most everything I will be doing can be done sticking to 2d sketches and then connecting them.  I just can figure out the best way to do that.
