I have encountered files that I cannot opened unless they are less than 12 characters long. If they are longer I cannot open the file and I do not get a warning or any feedback from SolidWorks. Other files still open as normal on SolidWorks.

I was able to open the files on a colleagues computer. While it was open I could open them on mine as read only. Then to save them as my own to work on them elsewhere they are automatically renamed. For example original part file name was: "TL-MAC-COC-18-201". Now it is "TL-MAC~1.SLD". I can rename the file with 12 character or less, but as soon as I go larger they cannot be opened.

To repair the files so that I can use them I have tried:

  1. Pack and go using my and a colleagues computer.
  2. Restarting the computer.
  3. Using the SolidWorks open dialog. This shows configurations in the drop down, but I cannot select the mode; i.e. resolved, lightweight etc.

Any help would be appreciated.
