How to apply PDM standard feature in small workgroup about 5 user ?
More info is needed to correctly answer that question. It will depend a lot on what you are going expect PDM to accomplish for you. A typical user could be looking only for a system to handle secure file storage or expecting it to help in document workflow (for example - a particular type of action in a document could trigger an approval cycle sending the file to need additional review or it could be handled as completed/finalized with no more action needed). Also, the type of info you want to track in the database should be planned before even starting to set it up. In short, plan on spending some significant time before jumping into it.
Before any of that action starts, be sure you have the appropriate hardware (server, etc) and that sequel server express software (furnished free with PDM std) is installed.
PDM std can be a good solution when given sufficient prior thought about what the expectations are.
Our first info to begin jumping into PDM standard :
1). We have 5 clients with SW Premium 2017 sp 5.0 licenses (PDM standard include)
2). 1 unit server with O/S win server 2012 R2 std (cpu: intel xeon 4GB RAM, 600Gb storage)
3). Workflow in our Eng.department
4). We use LAN network 100Mbps
4). i am the engineer in this group, and will be an admin of the server too.
Our urgent goals :
- make every components in the large assembly is update , so each user can positioning their component in the right place, not overlapping.
- know exactly, who design what
So..... what can we do then?
Please tell us, step by step how to start .
Thank you in advance
if you've never done any admin before, I think you'd better get help from your VAR to set PDM up
We already coordinate with IT guys & VAR.
But VAR guys always tell it cannot work without install PDM profesional, they always tell it.
Is it true or not ?
I sincerely believe you can run a PDM Standard vault !!!
I am currently implementing PDM Standard. 10 users and an old (very old) PDM Workgroup with around 1 Tb of files. The file conversion has been a nightmare and is still in progress. So we are not there yet but I expect to launch in 2-3 weeks.
What I did was to ask the VAR for the serial numbers (not the same as SW serial) and install both the server and client on an isolated PC. It took less than one day and I never installed a vault or any other server software before. Artikels from Javelin (Javelin Canada's largest SOLIDWORKS & Stratasys 3D Solution Provider) are extremely helpful.
Then set up a workflow that satisfy your needs. If you can do that, and truthfully say "I can live with that" to every single limitation in PDM Standard, I can not see how your VAR can insist on the Professional.
Besides if you want more functionality later it should be fairly easy to upgrade. And THEN your VAR will sell Professional licenses - If he keeps insisting you probably never will get started.
So in short - GO FOR IT.
Thanks for your advice.
i know it was PDM STANDARD... it will come with many limitations.
At least, we must go step ahead to jumping around PDM, in an entry level first, its ok.

Can't tell it's true or not - I created a comparision between the 2
it's true if you need the second column; otherwise, PDM standard is good enough for you
