We mostly do Alum. & Plastic parts and use HSS tools not Carbide. Cam always picks carbide tools and I am change feeds and speeds. Can I set something to get Cam to default to HSS tools instead of Carbide?
Make a Tool Crib with only the tools you want to use and select that one when you do your Machine Set-Up. You can edit tools to have a specific SFM and a MAX RPM. Then save them as what ever you want (tool number, Name).
Thanks that is what I am doing. But it would be faster if I could get to the HSS tools quicker.
Where are you getting your defaults from? When you 'generate operation plan'?
Getting the defaults takes a bit of back-end work, but pays off greatly over time. You can set most of your defaults from the Technology Database. You can also save operations as an operation plan STRATEGY with a name. So, when you have a feature that you want to generate a plan for, you just select it from the 'Strategy' drop down menu.Then it will automatically pull in a tool and parameters to which to machine to.
Note, the Tech database app from solidworks/camworks is stupid slow. I recommend using MS Access to view and edit the database.

As an FYI,
SOLIDWORKS CAM is built on SQL lite not access. CAMWorks 2018 was also converted to SQL. 2017 and earlier versions were built on Access databases. SW CAM and CAMWorks can use the same SQL Database as well. In 2018 we changed the look and feel of the database with the change to SQL. The previous access databases were confusing in the layout and operation. The first version of sql in 2018 has been updated to help users have a better experience. We have had some enhancement requests to improve it in future versions to add more information and options to the user as it relates to tooling and process planning information.

Do you know if there is a way to speed up our database? It takes more than 30 seconds to open up the features and operations section.
This is something we are looking at. The time does seem to vary from computer to computer but we have taken notes on this for future development.
