Can you save a STL file as a STEP file? When I go thru the steps and then try to open the STEP file all I get is a blank screen. Using 2018
Attach your file
It is possible that the stl file is composed of only surfaces instead of solid bodies. These have no thickness so they would possibly not save correctly as a step file.
you can try to open an STL as a Solid Body or Solid Geometry in SW. You can also convert it to a Mesh Brep body. Otherwise you will not get anything in a STEP file. STLs do not have any geometry such as lines and surfaces.
Hello Jason,.. it would depend.. so I have to ask.. too make sure,.. is the STL you are seeing,.. geometry (solid/surface) or a Graphic? (image attached)
Hey Jason... ok.. yeah, you can't do anything with the graphic.. although, for 2018 (if you have the module,.. RMB).. you would need to either convert it to a solid (or surface, if it is closed?) (via the mesh options)...
Or, re-import,.. go into the settings (shown above) and select "Solid".
I cannot find where to change this within the system options
Just found it. trying this now
No luck. Changed setting to solid body, opened STL and did a save as STEP. The the spinning circle of death happened and SW was eventually forced to shut down. Not being able to do this is not a huge deal, just would have been nice. Thanks everyone
Hey Jason,.. yeah, STL's do not always play nice.. btw,.. is the file available for us to look at?
I was just using a random file to see if it was possible. Plus I would need to research how to attach a file on this forum as there only seems to be a link button. Thanks for everyone's help
Hey Jason,.. (see your response but will post for others)... there are a couple ways but the most direct, is while you are opening/importing the file.... BUT,.. first,.. you have to select the "All Files"..at the bottom right corner,.. and select "STL, OBJ,..) (image attached)
