I'm sorry if this has been asked/answered already - I couldn't find where.
When selecting contours/regions for extrude SW is pulling regions from underlying model/surfaces that are not part of the sketch.
How does one turn off this feature?
have the sketch be NOT on the face of the part. if needed create a new plane coincident with the part face.
Thanks for that Jeremy
Yes that does solve the problem
SW, this is a cumbersome workaround.
I'd be curious to know how many users like and/or use the feature of presuming regions from the underlying model.
I remember when this feature came out and I have never used it.
I use it extensively - I find the regions to be more robust than convert entities for our parts and changes.
I have never seen SolidWorks extrude an area that wasn't part of a sketch, with the exception of open sketches where it will use an edge to finish the sketch. Can you post a Part where this happened?
It happens to me alot - but then again i often use faces for sketching instead of creating new planes
Open the attached part, open extrude2 , clear the contours and select an area within the semi-circle.
Viola - extrude that has inferred from underlying part
aaaaaand i can't see how to add a file to this post
here is a screen shot
make first sketch with the smaller circles
Then make second sketch using face of part for sketch plane
Then extrude selecting within the semi circle

The software sometimes tries to read your mind, with mixed results. In this case it assumed you wouldn't want to extrude where the holes are. If that's not the case then you need to click on them with this box highlighted (as it is in the screenshot).
