We evaluated the add-in but so far decided it is not worth it. Here is a list of frustrations that we faced. I'm putting these here in hopes of SW fixing these issues in later versions and we might reconsider:
Overall:
- Documentation is poor. Had to search the web and forums to find answers.
- The SW Add-in software code is not very stable and crashed a few times. I also found multiple bugs which I may report in another post.
SW Add-in Problems (automatic ballooning):
- Balloons don't attach to attached GD&T's (If GD&T itself is already attached to a dimension. The program must look for what dimension the GD&T is attached to and group the balloon with that dimension instead)
- Every time you exclude a characteristic it will loop over all the other ones and you have to wait (even if re-numbering is not chosen).
- You can't select multiple characteristics in the list (to exclude or change properties)
- Overridden dimensions do not import the value (although it says it should but I couldn't get it to work)
- Configured dimensions that are labeled (such as dim "G") and reference a table won't import (I saw this issue in another post in this forum as well that lettered dimensions don't work)
- Couldn't get UL and LL to import into the excel template. Had to use a macro to generate UL and LL in my excel template.
- Does not recognize degree sign or quotation in GD&T/BASIC dims (SW GD&T font issue)
- Font size in the exported template always defaults to 12 (Tried to fix it with excel macro but it is frustrating)
SW Add-in Problems (manual ballooning):
- Every click still loops through all previous dims (even if re-numbering is not chosen) - It would have been better to be able to do all the settings and selections of the characteristics and then click an update button to loop over all characteristics and update them.
- I think if the manual ballooning was set up to be easier to use and less frustrating, it is even better than automatic (Users prefer to choose which dimension to add to inspection plan rather than auto-ballooning and exclude the ones that they don't want)
Stand Alone PDF version problems:
- OCR (although pretty good in my personal opinion) is not perfect and requires double check and manual input (takes about the same time as doing it directly in excel and adobe). Users faced problems where it didn't grab the number of instances correctly or the dimension tolerances and thus proved to be unreliable.
- It is possible to import only snipped images of dimensions into the excel report (which saves a lot of time) but it looks ugly and unorganized (especially for notes). A hybrid export would have been much better where you get to choose which ones to import as image (e.g. GD&T or labeled dims) and which ones as text (e.g. dimensions and notes). right now it is either image or text.
- If you want the exported result to look pretty for GD&T you basically have to redefine all GD&T from the interface (how is that time efficient and mistake proof?)
This tool can be a real problem solver for companies but with the current bugs and frustrations it didn't satisfy our team.
Looking forward to improvements.
