when I open an assy the filename in the top banner has an asterisk after it. What does that mean?

Well, there is always a reason why SOLIDWORKS thinks the file needs to be saved. It just isn't clear what the reason is. Crusty Old Templates is always a possibility.
It means that the file has changed from the last time it was saved.
It means SolidWorks thinks something in your assembly changed.
Sometimes you made a change on a part without opening the assembly so that is why this happens.
Basically, it means it needs a save because there's a difference between the last save and right now.
