Bent sheet metal and k factor

I'm still learning here, but I have some questions about working with bent sheet metal. In the past, the last few sheet metal parts I've designed had to be adjusted by out lead engineer to correct the overall length of the flat pattern. He hasn't shown me what he is doing, but I know that some of the parts I've put out had to be adjusted before going to punch/laser and then the break press.

Can anyone briefly explain how the k factor works in SW and how I should either utilize it/or dont to get flat patterns and bend line locations properly situated? My break press guy showed me a few equations from the machinist handbook to modify the flat pattern, but I am not exactly sure how to apply it to SW when automatic k factor exists. Thank you.
