I want to import a step file into solidworks 2018 but I want the program to convert the solid rather than giving me .STEP files in solidworks. Is there a way to do so?
Go to options>System options>Import and clear Enable 3D interconnect. That should give the normal import of other file formats.

You can import the .step file then run feature recognition.
This usually works pretty well if your part is not too complicated.
There is a Featureworks tutorial under Solidworks Tutorials: Productivity Tools.
Hope this helps.
Once you've run the part thru Featureworks, it will save as a .sldprt file.
I think he wants editable Solidworks features.
He asked how to import without retaining the native .step format. :-) Therefore my suggestion.
That is exactly what I needed, thank you very much. I'm importing chassis frame rails so feature recognition would open potentially the largest can of worms I have seen.
I'm sure that feature may be useful in the future, but boy was it annoying me today!
