What are virtual components?

I can't find them in help and they have shown up in some of my assemblies. I know nothing about them so how did they get there?

When you create a part in the context of an assembly you have the opportunity to save it as a separate file or as part of the assembly (virtual component). They are usually used when someone needs a quick mock-up of a part that they don't care about. I tend not to use them because they are somewhat unstable.

  Did you use the Search tab in the Help files? Search on Virtual and there is info on them in the SW Help.

    I personally think they are one of SolidWork's biggest mistakes. I much prefer the old method. It's much more reliable.

  I have been using scaffolding (sketches and layouts) for parts I need but don't care about. Scaffolding seems to have infinite strength and zero deflection.
  
  The downside is that sub assemblies with scaffolding cannot be solved as flexible.
