Is there a way to have unique drawings for multiple configurations?

I have some assemblies made up of a set of parts that get put together in different but similar ways.  For instance my assembly might have lights in one configuration and no lights in another, but the the rest is the same.  I would like to be able to have all of my parts drawn once and then find some way to pull in the appropriate part drawings to my project drawing package in such a way that if I were to modify a part drawing it would trickle out to various configurations of my top level assembly.  This way I don't have to revisit all of my configuration drawings every time a single reused part is changed.

Is there a way to do this?  Have I asked the question in a way that makes sense?  (If not I will try to clarify)  I have been poking around the web looking for something along these lines, but have been striking out.  Help would be appreciated.
