Why can't #TASK find my .stp files unless I have already opened it and there is a .err file?

I am new to #TASK and I was trying to use it to convert a bunch of .stp files I have into SolidWorks files.  Problem is that it seems only able to find .stp files if it already has a .err file to go along with it... which gets created when I throw it into SolidWorks.  This is rather annoying since the whole point is that I want my .stp files brought into SolidWorks without me having to babysit it.  Does anyone know how to make this work?

I am using the stock #task Import 3D task and SolidWorks 2017.
