crawler crane boom + jib

Hello,

I'm trying to build a crawler crane boom with jib using weldments. It is a school project where we have to improve an existing faulty design. I want to then test my improved construction dynamically in SolidWorks.

The wire structure of the boom is on the front plane. From there I created a new plane 1250 mm behind - so to speak - the front plane. On this plane I drew same wire structure but 50% offset. I haven't gotten to the jib yet. From the front plane the back plane the line tool doesn't catch.

I'm forgetting something really simple I suppose. But I'm stuck. Please help.

Correct Answer

I retried many times and finally I succeeded. What went wrong went wrong each time at a different state of progress. Overdefined were it could not be overdefined. Then I stepped back with Ctl+z, did it again, and again and again. And then it stuck. I will never know what went wrong.

I tried a different route this time. But I can't seem to finish the 3D wire structure. I know that SW can be finicky. But I have the 3D cursor active in the right plane. I'm using SW 2016 student version.

Why is it that I can draw the 2 lines in that plane but not all of them?

You can draw the lines in 3D sketch and then associate them with a plane or axis. I usually draw straight lines, place them in the position I want, then add fillets in the corners. Then select one of the end lines with RMB and select chain and then go to "Tools-Spline-Tools-Fit Spline"

I read your problem a couple of times to try to understand what it was you were trying to do then I tried to connect the dots using the 3D Sketch tools and had absolutely no problem with it. So I am not sure what and why it would not work for you. I wish I was watching over your shoulder to see how you were doing this. That would be the only way I could see if you were doing things correctly. If you are going to do an FEA study on it I hope you have a decent computer for yourself. Many times I have failed with those studies because my computer is as old as I am. cplrich@cox.net
