I have a part that has several lines of text actually painted on its surface. What is the best way to depict this? I am not looking for extruded or embossed text. I can not use a decal as that would be included in the BOM. Each line of text is a specific height and there is specific line spacing requirements between lines.

If you don't want to add a thickness for the paint you could Split the face(s) and change the Face Appearance(s).

I am aware that paint has a thickness, but the original drawing I am working from is over 40 years old and does not specify a thickness. I guess I could go with an extremely small thickness. What is the minimum thickness I could go with? In regards to your "Split the face(s) and change the Face Appearance(s)" option, I am new to solidworks and am unfamiliar with that option.

Hello Ken,.. as J. Mather has said,.. it would have paint material thickness but if you don't want that, you could also do a surface offset (.010 so it is forward) and trim using your text sketch and color? (if you are doing a drawing, you will need to turn surface visibility on)

I have tried to add text, but was unable to manipulate it when set and I couldn't figure out how to fill in the letters. Also would the lettering be its own sketch?
Ken,.. I could post a model... but, there are some videos on-line which maybe of some help for using Split Face and another one which is pretty easy is Wrap (using the inscribe option (similar to split face)... so, check this link out and scan to which one applies to your want/need..
