My mouse wheel suddenly stops zooming in and out with no warning, and the only way to get it back is to save and close, and reopen the assembly. The mouse never stops working otherwise; the wheel just suddenly stops performing zooms.
Does anyone have a plausible explanation for why this might occur, and/or any tips on how to prevent it?
FYI: Logitech M720 Triathlon w/unity receiver, Win10Pro & SW2018 SP1.0
First step, hard reboot of computer
Second step, try a different mouse.
Report back the results from first 2 steps and we will have a further discussion.
Does it stop working on all programs or just SolidWorks?
Did you try unplugging and replugging the mouse before closing?
Have you tried updating your mouse drivers?
Is it a new mouse or have you been working with it for a while and it just started acting this way recently?
It doesn't even stop working within Solidworks! This problem isn't continuous - it works fine for a while and then just quits working.
The sole malfunction is the mouse wheel stops zooming after working fine for a while - and this just started happening yesterday. Strangely, the wheel continues to scroll up and down in the design tree.
The mouse is wireless, and I have the latest driver.
I have been working with this mouse in the exact same setup for a couple of months. The only difference is service pack 1, but it's been installed for a week or so. This problem started yesterday afternoon.
You need to clean your mouse
I really feel very sad for this mouse because it is struggling to clean paste on its body.

There is only 1 valid debugging technique to start with for this situation.
Try a different mouse.
If it is a cheaper one you can more than one mouse and try a different one, but if it is expensive one options are limited.
As Rick Becker stated, you need to test with a new mouse to know if it really comes from the mouse first or from the computer.
This is what you should do.
When the bug happens, unplug the Logitech mouse and replug it.
If it still doesn't work, try a different mouse just for the sake of it.
If the new mouse works, I'd say it has to do with your Logitech mouse.
Have you contacted your VAR about this..? Perhaps they've heard of people having similar problems..?

So does that mean you have tried a different mouse?
Does this mouse use batteries? Battery powered devices can act strangely when battery power is low....

I already know the problem is not the mouse, which is why I am here. I want to talk about why Solidworks seemingly randomly ceases to zoom via the mouse wheel. It happens to colleagues of mine too, on completely different hardware.
Let's talk about Solidworks, not my mouse.

Apparently we completely misunderstood. Normally when people come here they want help, and to be fair, your Discussion is marked as a question. I realize you're a new member and probably didn't know you could de-select that option when creating a new Discussion. And I think you can also understand why the highlighted portion below may have led someone to think you were asking for help.
I've been an active member of this forum, and using SW for 6 - 8 hours a day, since 2009, and I've never run into the situation you described, and don't remember anyone else reporting it here, so since you only want to talk about SolidWorks and not your mouse I'm afraid I don't have anything else to add to the discussion. Other than I'm astonished it's happened to your colleagues also.
Several people have suggested cleaning your Mouse. Have you tried that? Never mind. I forgot for a second that you don't want help.

I have the same experience concerning mice wheels and SW ad Glenn does.
Never saw this happen and never heard of anyone else having it happen to.
So...
Here is my new best advice for you...
Kindly contact your VAR (Value Added Reseller). They are paid to handle occurrences such as this and have a much larger database of occurrences that has happened to others. They also have the ability to escalate you issue up the chain to SW itself.
Good luck and kindly let us know (by posting in this thread) what the problem and fix was after your VAR fixes it.
I'm glad you have never had this problem, and thanks for listing your Solidworks street cred!
Pardon my ignorance here - I don't understand why anyone is even bothering to chime in when they don't have any answer to the core of my question, which you have thankfully highlighted above.
I asked for a plausible explanation, not a walk-through on how to unplug a wireless mouse, which as I said functions perfectly otherwise.

when the mouse starts to act up
#1- try opening the task manager...
and see which programs is using
the most cpu/memory-
where possible close the biggest offender in each case
#2- roll your driver back to an earlier ver.
or just the previous version

our office is having that same problem. two new Lenovos (P51, P71) both on Windows 10 pro. one wired mouse on the P51 and I am using my Evoluent mouse. I have used this mouse for over a year now on Solidworks 2016 with no issues. both of us just got 2018 as SP 1.0 was coming out. I found out today that my office mate with the wired mouse is having the same issue. the wheel zoom just stops working. works fine for an hour or three then stops. came looking for answers (our VAR has never answered a question) as to why. appears that the common factor is SW 2018 SP 1.0

Ian, SP2.0 is out and has fixed a boat load of bugs.

Sounds like this intermittent issue may have been around for a while (This is from 2006 - Looks like it was closed 2011 SP5.0) -
There have been several issues reported relating to Logitech mouse peripherals. The SolidWorks development team has written a Software Performance Report (SPR) for this issue is and labelled it as SPR 235034.
As a possible work around try pressing Ctrl+Q to rebuild the next time the middle mouse wheel starts acting incorrectly. This sometimes restores some of the Logitech mouse functions.

Let me put this to bed.
It's not the mouse and it's not Solidworks - IT'S BOTH. Logitech Options and Solidworks do not play well together, as far as my experience has shown.
One day a few months ago, when working remotely, I lost my mouse, and I decided to replace it with the 3dConnexion CadMouse Wireless, and I have no regrets whatsoever. I simply do not have this problem anymore.
To all of the Rick Beckers and James Riddells and Glenn Schroeders of the World, you should be nicer to people.
