change the name of the part that is in an assembly

i have a big problem.
i create an assembly with some parts. and i have changed the name of some parts. and when i open the assembly these parts are suppresed. i change the names but it doesn´t appear.
what can i do?

Correct Answer

If I understand you correctly, the software automatically "supressed" the parts because the assembly didn't find them when you opened the assembly.

You can either do a replace component, right click on the suppressed part in the feature tree and replace component, or when you go to open the ass'y, in the dialog box click references and change the reference to the new part filename.

  Go to the advanced tab of your SW options. There will be an error message that reads something like "SW can't find this model, would you like to find it yourself?". Hit the checkbox next to this message. Close and reopen your assembly and find the files of the parts that changed names when it asks. I think it will also ask you to find them if you unsuppress them.
  
  If SW can't find the file, and you've told SW to ignore that error message about finding files, it will suppress the parts it can't find.

    If you are looking to avoid this in the future, change the file name from in SW explorer and the references should update.

One way to get the files back to the right ones is;

RMC the file name in question in the FMT, select "replace component" browse to the file you want in the assembly click ok. You may need to unsuppress the file if it was suppressed to see it. Do this for all files that you need to change.

The parts are suppressed because the assembly cannot find the old name, to fix this when you go to open the Assembly, click "references" and replace the old ones with the new ones.

In the future if you want to change the name without all this hassle, Open the assembly. While in the assembly open the part and tell it to "save as" Chose your new name and it will replace the part in the assembly. Then you simply just delete the old part name at your convienence.

    I am having the problem of SW not finding the new P/N even though, when I changed the names I had the "update where used" box checked. Even more annoying than that is when I load the ass'y and it asks me if I want to find the new P/N myself, it makes me find it twice. Any idea why this happens? I am using SW2008 SP3.0

Regarding SW Explorer's ability to rename a part, remember that it will only look in the directory where the part is, and any other pre-set directories under SW Explorer's options. I wish you could choose directories from the rename window, because we put all our purchased parts in a sub directory under the assembly. Could this be your problem?

I commonly have the double prompt to find the part problem as well, but don't have a solution.

  What I did was bring in a part from the internet, a Parker fitting, when I added a BOM to my drawing the part name was too long so I changed the name. The fitting is in a fitting directory not the directory where my ass'y is but when I renamed it I did not change the directory it is in.

I think I may recall a possible solution... but my memory is quite vague on it, so it may not be right.

If the missing part is part of a sub-assembly, try opening the sub-assembly and then saving it after finding the missing part.

I wonder if the double prompt could also be related to it being in a sub-assembly?
