Use Distance Mate as Linear Pattern dimension?

When patterning a virtual component instead of reproducing it in context, is there any way to select a distance mate as the linear pattern dimension?

If the two (same) objects move further apart, I'd like the patterned component to move with it.

It seemed intuitive (yet impossible) to find the mate and select it when specifying the linear dimension. Maybe I'm missing some syntax. Is this doable?

I understand that I could do this with a global variable, to set on-center object distance, and then link both the mate and the pattern to that. Is this the only way to accomplish this co-relation easily? I try to avoid GV's in my work. Or, can a GV be defined from the distance mate, to then perpetuate into patterns?

Alternately, does anyone familiar with skeleton sketch part method have additional insight to this situation?
