how can i fix the balloons to link correctly to BOM.?
Need more info or a pack and go of the assembly.
Good Morning Alex,
This is a multi body part not an assembly.
on the multi body part i have 3 different configurations that are really similar, to save time on the drawing details i copy one sheet over and change the configuration of the part.
when i change the configuration of the part the BOM updates correctly, but the balloons does not. Balloons only show the item # but not the detailed numbers.
- configuration is link to the BOM correctly.
- in the link below is an example I made.

thank you for the info, it took me a couple minutes to get it.
I have attached the part & drawing, also the zip file from the Pac & Go option.
By the way i am using SW-2018
What version of SolidWorks do you use? I can't really help you more then this without a pack and go to be honest.
Take a screenshot of your drawing, including the featuretree so I can see the name of your BOMs(if there are multiple)
Take a screenshot of the property of the view that won't switch to show me that it is indeed assigned to the BOM.
I am currently using SW-2018
the Pack & Go option is attached under TEST-MULTI BODY PART.zip, the other two attachments is the part & the drawing.
sheet1 is correct, sheet1(2) is what i copied and changed the configuration.
Unfortunately I'm on 2016 still so I can't help you on that side. If you click in the FeatureManager on ''Bill of Materials4'' do you see your bill become highlighted as such? If so then it is indeed attached to the correct BOM.
I work with multibody parts a bit and have never had that problem so I'm not sure what the problem could be.
yes it does,i have been having this problem since 2017.
the only way i can work around it is by inserting a new BOM.
thanks for trying to help.
I had that problem back on 2014, don't really remmber what we did to fix it. I think it was something very subtle. Have you tried contacting your VAR about it?
How many characters do you have set for your balloons? Maybe it's set to only one.....
I have it set to 2 characters.
The only way i have been able to fix it is by deleting the BOM and inserting a new one.
I have had to do that as well in the past....seems SolidWorks has at times a hard time updating BOM's, don't know why....
Just for fun you could set it for 3 or 4.....maybe if one balloon doesn't have enough space, it fails them all. Maybe SolidWorks considers a decimal point as a character....
it does not work.
i got it to work once in the past, where I remove the links from the multi body part from the BOM and some other steps that i don't remember.
I believe it has to do with the BOM configuration settings in the properties box. I was able to get it to update correctly by selecting "Detailed Numbering" under the indented section in the BOM type section.....
are you looking at sheet1(2)? i did the same thing but it does nothing for me.
I had to remove it and put it back to get it to display correctly. It doesn't appear to be a way to edit a BOM's properties once it has been placed on a drawing. Perhaps this needs to be something that needs to be saved into a BOM or sheet template.
do you mind explaining step by step what you did?
if i delete the BOM and insert a new one it will update all balloons correctly, is the only way i can work around it so far.
I was doing what you were doing.....deleting the BOM, and making sure the new BOM had "detailed numbering" selected when placing the new BOM on sheet.
That kind of behavior has been around for a long time. Deleting and inserting a BOM is the best way to make sure it updates.
Sometimes it works and other it doesn't. Checking the BOM takes usually longer then inserting a new one.
SPR 420234 might have something to do with it. I know it says its fixed in 2009 but they call it out as closed (inactive). I think that means it no-one is currently working on it. But I don't think it has been fixed.
I think thread BOM that updates automaticly is related
