First post. Former Inventor user, new to Solidworks.
I created a flange but the solidworks is inserting the rip centered about the flange edge making for an oddly shaped notch (see screenshot below). How do I tell Solidworks to put the rip so that the edge of the rip lines up with the edge of the flange?
In the Sheet Metal Feature Properties there is a Relief Cut choice in the dialog box, change the Relief Cut from Rectangle to Tear...

When I edit the sheetmetal feature the only option I have is "Auto Relief" when I select tear it doesn't change the location of the relief which is what I am trying to do.
Maybe I'm missing the correct checkbox? I've only been using the software for a week now.

Are you permitted to upload the part?
If so, you must first click on "Use advanced editor" in the upper right:

I searched everywhere and cannot find the advanced editor link. I'm on Windows 10, using Chrome. Maybe it's because I just signed up for an account today? See screenshot below.
Conrad don't reply directly from your inbox. Instead open this conversation in the forum itself. If you click on the message from your inbox click on the title and it will take you to the main topic of discussion. From here when you reply you will have the chance to use the advanced editor.
Also for future reference since you are new to Solidworks from Inventor you may need to set up some part templates that already have features like sheetmetal setup with your preferences to better move your parts along.

Tom, I went through the New Forum posts. That was very helpful.
Unfortunately I still do not have the options you show. I believe it is due to how I modeled the flange. I modeled the shape first, then converted it to sheet metal. This is how I would typically do it in Inventor as it gives me better control over flange shape (in this case I want symmetrical flanges driven by a single sketch).
Also, I could be I'm just not seeing that option. I'm using Solidworks 2017 Service pack 3.0

C B - I tried to open your part and SW crashed almost imediately, it stayed open long enough for me to see your layout.
You should start your part using the Sheet Metal Base Flange Tab and draw the back rectangle and then use the Insert Flange Feature for your flanges, now what you would need to do is edit the bottom flange and make your sketch changes there if you want, or you can create the flange and then add the features afterwards..
Took a quick look at your part and tried to re-create the convert to sheet metal feature and it gave me zero control over the relief of the tear position. Which is odd, although I never use this method for directly creating a part like this. See John Stoltzfus reply which is the way I would create the actual part.

I am bummed there's not a way to control the location of the relief. I don't know in what scenario you would want the relief centered about the edge of a simple flange.
Remodeling the part per John's recommendations gives me better results. I'll just shy away from using the convert to sheet metal command.

The most problems I see with SW sheet metal files, mostly from customers' files, is a converted file instead of one made of sheet metal commands from scratch.
A little late perhaps, but see attached.
