The best option seems to be applying a chequer pattern appearance to the face of the wheel tread.
The best method I can think of is to plot the roational velocity of the wheel vs the linear velocity of the vehicle.
There should be a linear relationship between these if there's no slippage.
The usefulness will depend on the type of ground it is going over, since you may have to focus on the linear velocity at the axle of the wheel to get the most accuarate relationship if the while goes varying terrain. Obviously if the wheel is bouncing along, then it's not going to be all that meaningful.
