Best approach to cut edge off of ANY flat part

For a project, I have to make a series of backing pieces that sit inside shrouds. I have to trim exactly 0.5mm off of the outside edge of the part in order for it to fit in the shrouds. This has been my approach so far:

It's a pretty easy way to trim off the edge of the part. However, when I throw a more complex shape into the mix, it causes problems. The following example was derived from an adobe illustrator file.

It has something to do with self-intersecting geometry.

How would you suggest I take 0.5mm off of the edge of the second part? I have attached both files to this post.
