Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Glenn Schroeder Nov 6, 2017 11:20 AM (in response to Diana Anzaldua)I don't remember anyone else reporting that, and I'm pretty sure there isn't any way to manually turn it off or on. Have you tried using the right or left arrow keys on your keyboard to see if that will make it show up, or at least give an indication of where it should be?

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Kelvin Lamport Nov 6, 2017 11:33 AM (in response to Diana Anzaldua)OK, here are the usual initial support questions;
Have you tried restarting SW, or rebooted the system?
Have you recently updated Windows or SW?
What OS, SW version, graphics card & driver are you using?

Glenn Schroeder Nov 6, 2017 11:46 AM (in response to Diana Anzaldua)I said I didn't remember anyone else with the same issue, but I have a notoriously bad memory. Kelvin Lamport found this, which reports the same, although no one replied with a fix.

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Diana Anzaldua Nov 6, 2017 12:14 PM (in response to Dan Pihlaja)In my case, it's just not there at all. It's only missing in Solidworks notes. It's there when I edit a dimension. It's fine in all other programs (excel, word, email, etc.).

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
John Lunsford Feb 13, 2018 6:37 PM (in response to Justin Byerly)I'm having the same issue, in both 2017 & 2018. The cursor is present and accounted for in 2015 on the same machine.
Anyone have some new suggestions?

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Matthew Siok Mar 16, 2018 9:00 AM (in response to John Lunsford)I am getting the same issues in Solidworks 2016 SP4 (yeah we're behind a little), I'm installing SP5 to see if that fixes but from what i'm reading here I'm not too hopeful.
I just switched and got a new laptop from a tower but in terms of updates to OS i'm running on essentially what i was before.

Kyle Mitchell Jul 9, 2018 10:36 AM (in response to Matthew Siok)Same issue. 2018 SP3, recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
I have up to date graphics driver for both, never experienced this on Windows 7 but now happening on Windows 10.

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Reynold Christian Aug 6, 2018 7:30 PM (in response to Jason Blondin)OKAY SO I ALSO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE CURSOR NOT APPEARING AT ALL WHILE EDITING NOTES IN DRAWINGS,I AM RUNNING SOLIDWORKS 2018 SP 0.1 AND I SOMEHOW MANAGED TO FIX IT.
1.CLOSE ANY DRAWINGS OR ANY FILES YOU MIGHT BE WORKING ON
2.GO IN TOOLS/OPTIONS/SYSTEM OPTIONS/PERFORMANCE
THEN CHECK : " USE SOFTWARE OPENGL"
I HOPE IT HELPS!!

If using that option fixed your problem, then you either have a non-approved graphics card or are using an incorrect graphics driver.

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
David Brukardt Aug 6, 2018 9:45 PM (in response to Kelvin Lamport)Kelvin,
Where I work just upgraded to SW2018 SP3.0 on about 100 computers. Some are on Win 7 others on Win 10. Some on towers and others on laptops. All have approved graphic cards and drivers. Out of those there is one user on a laptop running Win 10 that does not get a text cursor unless running OpenGL (there are several other computers with the same configuration that do not have the issue). When we figure it out, I will report back.

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Kyle Mitchell Aug 7, 2018 3:10 AM (in response to David Brukardt)I had the same issue SW2018 SP3.0, recently upgraded to windows 10 and installed the approved graphics driver.
I've just tried this option and yes the cursor did come back in drawings, however overall performance was severely affected. Is this pointing towards a problem with the approved driver for Windows 10? Mine is also laptop.
Thanks, Kyle

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
David Brukardt Aug 23, 2018 11:39 PM (in response to Kyle Mitchell)Yes running OpenGL will downgrade overall performance (bypasses the graphics card). Besides running OpenGL, I have found two other solutions.
1) Set SolidWorks to use the integrated graphics built into the motherboard.
2) Go into the NVIDIA Control Panel (if you have an NVidia card) and in the Manage 3D Settings section Global Settings tab set the Base Profile to use the Integrated graphics and in the Program Settings tab set SolidWorks to use the graphics card. The only issue I have with this is I do not know how this will affect the performance of other applications. I have tried to get SolidWorks opinion on this but so far they have not gotten back to my VAR. This "fix" may not work on all computers; our laptops are Dell 7720 with a NVidia P3000 graphics card.

*edit* this never happened before upgrading from Windows 7.

Todd Blacksher Aug 7, 2018 11:26 AM (in response to Justin Byerly)Justin - This is extremely rare, but there have been issues with the latest driver from the card manufacturer vs. the latest "approved" driver from SOLIDWORKS.
Like I said, it is super rare, so it probably isn't an issue, but just so you know . . .

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
David Brukardt Aug 23, 2018 11:42 PM (in response to Kelvin Lamport)Kelvin,
I mention my computer and graphics card in my last post. Driver is 386.07 which seems to be the only approved driver for SolidWorks 2018. We have at least 4 different graphics cards (due to the type and vintage of our computers) and SolidWorks recommends the same one for all of them.

Henk Bruijn De Aug 8, 2018 3:08 AM (in response to Reynold Christian)I had the same problem with my laptop Dell Precision 7520 with WIN10pro and SW2018 SP3 with certified hardware and downloaded Solidworks recommended driver for the Quadro card.
The "USE SOFTWARE OPENGL"-trick worked for me too.
Thanks Reynold Christian .

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Douglas Stone Oct 3, 2018 10:33 PM (in response to Reynold Christian)The "Use Software OpenGL" is for debugging. It removes the hardware from the loop and just checks that SolidWorks is running as it should. When your issue is "fixed" when this is activated it really means that your graphic card and/or driver are not working as intended. Basically your issue, not SolidWorks problem. Update your driver etc. and it might fix it, it hasn't in my case.
With the "Use Software OpenGL" active your graphics card is not being used so you are wasting money on it for not benefit. You've paid the big bucks for the fancy CAD card I would want it to do its job.

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
John Matrishon Aug 7, 2018 12:23 PM (in response to Diana Anzaldua)In addition to the driver issue (most likely), keep an eye on Windows 10 display scaling. It tends to default to 125% with some themes, and depending on your driver and screen resolution settings that can cause some interesting things. Recommend using 100%.
Lets also not forget that some Win10 setups will automagically update your graphics card drivers for you.

Re: My text cursor is missing when I edit note text - how can I get it back?
Dave Nall Feb 7, 2019 11:10 AM (in response to Diana Anzaldua)OK, so the OpenGL worked for me, I finally have a cursor back, but now something has changed and it is really slowing/crashing my system.
SW now traces every geometry line when I mouse over something in the FeatureTree. What is this feature so I can turn it off.
Thanks.
