Solidworks 3D Model to point cloud of X, Y, Z coordinates of set resolution?

Question asked by Thomas Hall on Oct 31, 2017

Any help on this issue would be much appreciated.

I am trying to export a 3D SolidWorks model into a point cloud format of set resolution of 0.1mm per se. I want the format to be readable as vectors for each position (similar to an IGES file with its point lookup) for use in a closest point search algorithm. My reason for not using the .stl or .igs file format is that they triangulate their points from vertices rather than as a continuous mesh.

A flat surface in the format I'm looking at would appear like;

x   x   x   x   x   x   x

x   x   x   x   x   x   x

x   x   x   x   x   x   x

x   x   x   x   x   x   x

x   x   x   x   x   x   x

x   x   x   x   x   x   x

Rather than the below representation for .stl or .igs file formats;

x                            x

x                            x
