Best way to make parts look good WITHOUT photoworks!

I don't have photoworks yet. I have an assembly of gears that I want to look as real as possible (shiny finish-chrome stainless?) Anyway, I need to export the model in motion as an avi file. My problem is that the client needs a white background. When I choose "plain white" the gears change - looks like it has something to do with the light/reflection??? When I have my background on "light cards" the gears look really good. Is there a work around to achieve a white background with the shiny gear appearance?

Why does the client need the white background? The reason I ask is if they are using in in a video presentation it is possible that you could try some differnt solidfill backgrounds like green or blue and have them removed later when the video is edited.

just a thought.

  Try inserting a giant white wall (a dummy part) behind the gears. It may not be perfectly white but it will get you closer.

All great suggestions. Why he wants white-who knows. But thats a great point about being able to remove the background anyway. I went and downloaded ZoomIn-Looks like a great little program. Easy to use! Thanks again!

When you change "Real View" choices each one has different lighting settings. That's what's changing the look of your reflections.

Pick the Real View that gives the look you want and in the browser bar go to "Light,Cameras and Scene" and right click and "show lights" then right click on each light in the browser and go to "properties" and write down all the settings.

Then change the real view to the white background and back in "Lights, Cameras, Scene" set up all the lights like what you've written down for the settings that gives you the look you want. You may have to re-position your lights also.

Another much easier way to do this might be to pick the Real View you want and then in System Options-- Colors-- Background Appearance pick "Plain(Viewport Background color above) and set the color to white.

I take it you've already experimented with Real View Appearances on the right hand panel, I think Chrome and polished aluminum are the shiniest.
