Locating Files

There seem to be two approaches to storing SW data. Some users put all of their files in one place, while others use a directory structure, segregating data by project, customer, or other criteria. My question is:

If you use a directory structure, how do you find your files? For example, if you're looking for the drawing for your new high-speed ultra Dornick, how do you figure out in which directory it lives? Let's make the very valid assumption that this Dornick is used in many projects, by many customers, and in many assemblies. How do you find it?
