Parts in parts

I have been working with extrudes and weldments and I can't seem to get the information such as material, length etc. or any other information, in to my BOM, from parts inserted in to other parts or assemblies. The parts inserted in to other parts or assemblies show up blank or not at all om my BOM.

Am I missing something? Do I need to do something else?

I can't get it to work as parts or as assemblies.

I have attached a few files, two parts, a part with an inserted part, a new part with two inserted parts, an assembly with two inserted parts and two drawings of parts and assemblies with BOM's.

Instead of using parts in parts, you can use virtual parts. They behave like normal parts in a BOM, and are stored in an assembly file so you don't have external part document links.

  I am not familiar with virtual parts.
  
  Since my intial post, I have changed my workflow a little.
  I primarily draw weldments and occasionally other parts and I just use assemblies to add fasteners.
  The BOM created from an assembly can only be sorted in the order which the parts were inserted, which I need to be in control of.
  I still would like to be able to create parts in individual part files and mate them together in an assembly, but there are to many
  limitations when creating a BOM of the assembly. If I insert the same part twice in an assembly, it will show up twice on the BOM and as I said, I can't sort it in the order I want.
  
  I haven't had the chance to test it in SW 2018 yet.

        The options I indicated are available after you create the BOM, but not during its creation (which seems odd, but here we are).
        Click the 4-way arrow button in the upper left of the BOM to display its property manager to change these.

    I don't use it much, and I'm at home today and don't have SW here so I could post a screenshot, but it is possible to highlight a column, right-click, and Sort. You can also grab rows and move them up and down however you wish.

      That's right, I can sort the top level parts. However I can't sort the weldments as I wish.
      
      I hide the top level parts on my indented BOM. But I still wish to sort it anyway I like.

Take a look at this section of the help:
2017 SOLIDWORKS Help - Virtual Components
Replace the parts with inserted parts, with an assembly with inserted parts. Make the parts you inserted into that assembly virtual. The result is an assembly file, that has each part file stored internally. Thus acting like a part in part file from a file structure point of view. But the behavior with a drawing, is such like a normal assembly that you can pull all the part properties for your BOM from all the virtual parts.
