constrain 3d spline

I was under the impression that when your drawing screen was in the 4 view port configuration, when you edit a spline handle it was supposed to move co planar to the active view port ONLY.

That doesn't seem to be the case. When I move a spline handle in the "right" view port I see it get whacked out in the "top" view port.

Is there some way to get the behaviour I thought was default?
