I recently updated to SW2017 and opened a part that some unknown person modeled. When I add a configuration it automatically adds a configuration comment. I've been using SW since 2007 and have never needed to use configuration comments nor have I seen SW's automatically add a comment. I believe the issue is part related, not SW2017 related because the parts that I've created that have configs doesn't do this. Does anyone know how to stop this behavior? Thanks.
We are going from 16 to 18 next weekend. We noticed this in 2018 as well. Flat configs automatically add a comment. Because the comment looks identical to the configuration icon it is confusing when switching configs. Many times I dbl click the comment instead of the config by mistake trying to switch. Wish there was a way to turn it off...

Because configuration comments can be added via design table under a $Comment column. I am kind of wondering if this is the case and if it being mistaken for something else.

As you probably know, SW2017 made several enhancement to comments (one being comment indicators) that also extended to the configuration manager tab.
What I believe Mr. Stadler is referring to is that when SolidWorks creates a flat pattern configuration it automatically adds "Flattened state of sheet metal part" under the comment section of the configuration properties.
Due to the SW2017 comment enhancements, a Configuration Comments folder is now displayed because of the auto generated comment.
If the comment folder is expanded, the comment looks like a configuration making it very easy to get the two confused if you are not use to having a comment folder displayed in the tree.
Unless (possibly) if you comment indictors turned on; then there is a difference between the configuration and configuration comment.
If you double click on it, the comment dialog opens instead of switching to the desired configuration.
Unlike other folders, there does not seem to be a way to turn off displaying the folder in the Hide/Show tree items
As with other SolidWorks functionality, something we will just need to get use to...

If a comment has been added to a configuration and deleted afterwards, it seems to be getting stuck to that model. This has been reported under SPR 1072592.

I read over SPR 1072592.
I deleted the comment successfully so it may be specific to their model or one of those SolidWorks bugs that occur when you least expect them.

As I said, if you add them once they get stick to the model. So even if you delete them they would come back. You can make a dummy file and try on that.
