We use .smg files to build from while we complete the work instructions. We do not make views or BOMs at this point. The assembly tree always shows the file name instead of the configuration.
Is there a way to have the configuration name show up INSTEAD of the file name? I know how to add a column to show the configuration. That is not what I want.

Not that I know of but you can simply right click and manually rename the items in the tree.
Thanks Jake. If I renamed them, could I rename all instances at one time? For example, our screw part number ends "-xxx". There may be 50 that would end "-012" and 30 more that end "-016". I wouldn't want to have to go one-by-one and rename them.

I dont believe so... I usually put all screws, bolts, nuts, etc. that are the same in their own assembly group. That way I dont have to bother shift+click to highlight them all. You can also rename the assembly groups.
Hi Todd, so to clarify this is SolidWorks Composer isn't it (you mentioned SMG files)?. As the previous posts show, yes this is a default in SolidWorks itself to distinguish between the assembly configs. In Composer it can be done, by customising the columns of the tree- hopefully the image below shows the mouse clicks:

I think so. If there was a setting i guess it would change all of the items in the tree- so the majority of the part actors would end up showing "Default"
True, but I would use an attribute we already have called PartNumber, which would have the part number you want to see on the BOM.

As far as I know you can include the configuration name as being displayed using the RMB click on the assembly and using tree display. (See Image 1)
But if you try to tell it to hide the file/component name you get this error message (See Image 2)
