Macro Feature's Sketch sub-feature enters edit state when Macro Feature is being edited?

I have a macro feature that is essentially a custom type an extruded cut so it has a sketch as a sub feature. When the macro feature is edited, the sketch also enters an edit state displaying all the dimensions and the sketch lines in there active colors. I guess my first question is whether or not this is necessary (I'm guessing it is) as I would rather edit the dimensions without having to put the sketch in an edit state. My second question is if its not necessary to have the sketch in an edit state when editing the macro feature how would I cancel the sketch edit state, but if it is necessary to have the sketch in an edit state what would be the best way to make it look like it is not.
