HI. I am SolidWorks 2017 user and Composer as well, for few days I got problem with translate assembly to *.smg format.
There is info: software is unable to translate file.
Any ideas how can I resolve it?
For me at least it was a large assembly problem. Try opening your model in SWX, check your assembly tree. If you see a little blue feather on any of the sub assemblies or parts you need to get rid of them. Right click your main assembly in the tree then "Set lightweight to resolved". Now that you dont have any lightweight sub assemblies you need to disable large assembly mode. System options>Assemblies and uncheck both options under "Opening Large Assemblies".
Hope this works!!
You can just save your file out of Solidworks directly to smg. Or is this causing you a problem too?
Yes. It generates SolidWorks crashes.
Problem began after SW update.
OK, I would try to open the file through Composer and then save the smg. This process opens Solidworks converter in the background though so it may also fail. If it does fail and since it's only been happening since your upgrade I would next recommend calling your VAR.
My company is also using SW 2017 and we seem to be having the same issue. We have several people who use composer and everyone is having the same issue. I also tried saving the file as .smg and it crashed my SW as well.
In most cases this is an installation Problem
first aid: try to reinstall composer
may be the swx plugin is not properly installed. To install the composer reinstall also the plugin
if this dosnt work call your SWX Partner
Does Solidworks Composer show you any error messages/logs when the import fails?
I have had this problem but only when opening a SWX file in composer AND merging into a new document. When I simply open the file in composer it works fine, I can then open and merge into a new document after converting to .smg. Might not help you but just a quirk I noticed!!
EDIT: That neat liittle trick of my has stopped working as of today.
Contact your VAR, they should be able to help. My VAR just helped me solve it in about 2 minutes. Im not sure if its proper to post the solution provided to me by them on here... perhaps Dirk Rautenberg can tell me if that is acceptable?
i think this is no Problem.
The Information is a help to other People an no Commercial Promotion.
Not the VAR or Partner will be in Focus but the solution!
Works perfect. Thank you Jake!
Happy to help!
Thank you for posting this. I was having this exact problem. Contacted my VAR and they couldn't solve it without me sending them a huge file.
