I'm doing some subassemblies and producing drawings for them. I'd like to be able to show the parent assembly geometry in the drawing and wondered the best way to accomplish that. I tried inserting the parent assembly in the drawing, but then the BOM shows all the parts on the parent assembly rather than just the parts on the subassembly. Any thoughts are appreciated!
When you insert a BOM, you are asked to "Select a drawing view to specify the model for creating a BOM"
So just click on a drawing view of the sub-assembly (and not the top level assembly).
Thanks, Bill, I won't have a view with the subassembly without the parent assembly in this drawing. I suppose I can create one off the page or on a second sheet without plotting the sheet, but also don't want to confuse people in the future who might open the drawing not knowing what's going on. Is there another way, or is this the best way? I suppose I could add a note explaining the purpose of the view.
If you don't want to include a drawing view of the sub-assembly on the printed page, then drag it off the sheet.
Another approach is to create another configuration in the main assembly. Then for each part you do not want to see in your BOM, right click on the part and show properties. Then click on "Exclude from BOM"
It produces a circular reference as a standard insert or as an envelope. I can suppress the subassembly in the parent assy and it will insert, but the other day I tried this but then the parent assy wasn't visible on the drawing. I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do what I'm trying to do.
We've decided that referencing the parent assembly isn't really the way to go. Rather we will show the level below where the subassemblies are added to the model as the reference. What was confusing me was the fact that these subassemblies each can be installed in no particular order so that it just looks a little weird. If we decide we want to get picky about the order they get installed we will just add additional levels to the main assembly to reflect the order of installation.
