NEW CONFIGURATIONS overriding existing appearances

i have a problem with certain parts where, (for example):

all in one part i have a PCB that is white. there are four LEDs that are colored faces red blue green orange. there is a ZIF connector (representative) that is beige. there is a reed switch sensor that is red (sep. body). the leads connecting the sensor and LED backs are chrome.

in other words, it's a multi-part body that has appearances applied to various bodies, features, and faces.

when i go to create a new configuration the following happens:

the WHITE PCB changes to a darker gray color

all LEDs change from their respective colors to blue

ALL FACES FEATURES AND PARTS REFUSE TO ACCEPT NEW APPEARANCES

this happens regardless of display state (create new display state, trying to switch back). everything is fine until you create a new configuration.

this isn't the first time this has happened to me. it was driving me nuts (one drawing is supposed to show the blue tab orientation on a flex cable, but everything is green and refuses to display the colors that SW shows are assigned), not it's physically making my body angry.

what's going on???
