Dear all,

Do you think SolidWorks 2016 would work properly on a computer with the following characteristics?

WorkStation HP Z440

Intel® Xeon® E5-1603 v4 processor

Cores: 4, Clock Speed: 2.8 GHz, Cache: 10 MB, Memory Speed: 2133 MT/s, Hyper-Threading: NO

Memory: 8 GB

Hard Drive: SATA 1 TB, 7200 rpm

Graphics: NVIDIA® Quadro® K620 (2GB)

I would like to know if the number of cores in the processor affects the SolidWorks' performance?

Somewhere I read that the software was not multithreaded and so the number of cores was not of great influence, but I've heard comments that it works best with 8 cores, what do you think?

I need advices since I am going to invest a good sum of money in the purchase of the workstation and as far as the price of that model is the one that is within my reach.

I have an HP Z440 but these are my spec's:

I have the NVIDIA Quardo K2200 and the 1TB SATA 7200 rpm hard drive. I would recommend paying the extra money for a solid state drive. I work on a lot of large assemblies and not have a solid state definitely affects my performance.

You are correct in when modeling the software only uses one core, search the for there is tons of discussions regarding this.

The performance of the system is going to be dictated by the type of work it will be expected to handle. If working with difficult geometry parts (swoopy shapes, surfaces, etc) it could slow performance. Also the number of parts you are going to have in assemblies. It is good to aim high with your system. It sounds good to think that it will be used for simple things for 90% of the time. If that other 10% is complex enough to keep it from giving acceptable performance, you are losing big-time.

You are correct in that much of SW is not able to take advantage of multithreading. Some things can benefit - surfaces and drawings (I think).

Being honest that is about the worst z440 machine you could get and is poor value for money due to the poor processor. Z440 machines are good or rather were good but the wait for new replacement for the e5 xeon series has took it's toll. If you must get a e5 xeon machine at the moment aim for one with e5-1620 v4 which is about the best bang for bucks in the e5 range for general solidworks use.

Hello Erika,

At the moment we run with:
Workstation HP Z640 ( renew )
- 2x Intel Xeon E5-2673v3 2,4GHz 12 Core ( 24 Core 48 Threads ) LGA2011-v3 Socket
- 32GB DDR4 PC4-1700 ECC 2133MHz
- 1x HP Z Turbo Drive G2 512GB PCIe 1st SSD
- 1x New Samsung PM863a Entrprise SSD 480GB
- Quadro M4000 G8 (new)
- DVD rom
- Windows 10 Pro 64 (English, geïnstalleerd)

We paid a total of 3500 euro excl. tax.

Half year ago I had the same question, i wanted a stable system with moderate to good performance and so far I can't complaint.
The system is very stable and never crashes. Im very satisfied and the render speed of both assemblies and graphic content is very smooth.

  That workstation is really good for rendering, multi thread processes and multi programs running at the same time.
  
  But if rendering is not a function you use often and you aren't running loads of programs in the background a Z240 workstation with i7 processor would out perform it easily in Solidworks.
  
  And that is what I would advise the OP go for the Z240 instead with the fastest i7/lowest core count processor because that would well out perform even the a e5-1620 v4 in Solidworks.
