Is it possible to edit/modify/change the symbols in the "Geometric Tolerance" tool? To set other symbols you use more often than the default ones which are already placed?
I think these symbols are controlled by the "Gtol.sym" file in the SolidWorks install directory
You can modify this to add or remove symbols, create your own symbols and re arrange these symbols using any notepad edit program
Make sure you keep a backup before making any changes
Hope this helps
If you already have one, just double click on it and you should get the dialog box to change (I'm on SW2015 and that's how I do it).

I am not sure that I understand, Steve. Can you share a screen shot of what you are talking about?
Dan Pihlaja I'm just double clicking the GD&T symbol (on my drawing, I assumed) to get the dialog box to pop open so I can add or change the already existing Feature Control Frame.
Ahh, I see what you mean now, Steve....
I thought that you meant that you would double click on one of those symbols that Adam has highlighted in his original post.
I think that Adam wants to change what is shown inside the box after you double click.
I think he means he wants to change the symbols in the highlighted area to symbols he uses more often. Is that right, Adam Holmes?
So I have created a flatness and when I double click the FCF this is what I see.
I thought he wanted to understand how to update a FCF.
Yeah that's right
The icons in the top line are there because you've not selected from the "Symbol" pull down menu and once you select from that first selection, IE, Position, Flatness, Straightness, ETC, you'll get a different set of available choices.
The first selection is the Symbol...

I am not sure that you can change those. However, the ones that are placed there are pretty much ALL the symbols that it is possible to be used inside a GD&T frame (assuming that you are following the ASME Y14.5M standard). So not really sure what you would change them to even if you COULD change them.
I want to change some symbols for other which I use more often instead of selecting more and finding the symbol I'm after every time.

Where can you select "more" in that box?
Ok, that is a different ball of wax altogether.
When you select the "more" that you are talking about, are you adding them outside the GD&T frame or inside the GD&T frame?
(you can do both, its just that you have to copy the symbol from the "more" dialog and then paste it inside the GD&T frame properties fields to get it inside the GD&T frame).
If you are adding them inside the GD&T frame, then I have 2 comments:
1) be careful what you are adding here because I am not sure that anything other than what is listed in the Geometric Tolerance Properties dialog box is allowed per the ASME Y14.5M standard. Even the 2009 version.
2) I don't think that you can add symbols to selector in the properties dialog box. But, if you had a text file, you could copy/paste them. But that would be the same as copy/pasting them from the "more" dialog.
If you are adding them outside the GD&T frame, then you can't add anything outside the GD&T frame anyway (except below the frame) edit: from that dialog box. If you are adding them below the frame, then copy/pasting is the only way to go.
Another option is to create your GD&T frame, then attach a note to it with the symbols that you want. Notes are a little easier to add symbols to maybe?
edit: or just add it to the box on the left.
That will change what is available in the "more" box that Adam pointed out, but I am not sure that it will change the dialog box for the GD&T frame. Hopefully Adam can tell us if it will.
